Whit Monday

Monday, 25 May 2026

Official public holiday — businesses, government services and schools are closed.

Whit Monday falls 50 days after Easter, the day after Whit Sunday, the Christian feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. Whitsun is regarded as the birthday of the Christian church and is one of the oldest Christian feast days. The name derives from the Greek word "Pentecost", meaning "fiftieth day".

In Belgium, Whit Monday is an official public holiday and together with the Sunday forms a long weekend. In some Belgian municipalities, traditional Whitsun walks and events are organised. The pleasant May weather makes Whit Monday a popular day for outings, open-air markets and family activities in the countryside.
