Labour Day
Friday, 1 May 2026
Official public holiday — businesses, government services and schools are closed.
Labour Day on 1 May commemorates the struggle of the workers' movement for better working conditions and social rights. The date references the Haymarket affair of 1886 in Chicago, where striking workers demanded an eight-hour working day. In Belgium, 1 May was officially recognised as a national public holiday in 1948.
In Belgium, trade unions organise large marches and rallies every year on 1 May, particularly in Brussels, Liège and other major cities. Political speeches, processions and a spirit of solidarity characterise Labour Day. Many Belgians also take the opportunity to enjoy the early spring weather with a trip into the countryside or a barbecue in the garden.
